AUSTRALIAN PM INVITED BACK HOME BY PR AND VIRTUAL HOMETOWN 'MAYOR'
Thursday 01 July 2010
New Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has received an invitation to come back to her hometown roots of Barry, Wales, by the town’s ‘virtual Mayor’, Charlotte Green of Quadrant Media and Communications Ltd.
Charlotte joined the Cardiff agency as account manger and social media specialist in June and her first act was to invite the new PM to her home town of Barry.
Using the location-based social media tool Foursquare, Charlotte gained her virtual political status as ‘Mayor’ of Barry Island, mirroring fellow Barry girl Gillard’s political success.
Charlotte is an active user of social media and an advocate of the online application, Foursquare. This tool lets users track their whereabouts using mobile GPS to find friends, contacts and points of interest in their local area.
Her frequent use of the online application on her native Barry Island led to her being appointed the town’s virtual ‘Mayor’ on the same day Julia Gillard was announced as the new head of state for Australia.
Charlotte said; "As fellow Barry-girls in office, I hope we can at least be united on-line."
She added; “It’s not often that two girls from Barry are named as political figure-heads on the same day and I’d be interested to hear what she thinks of my Mayorship now she’s the Prime Minister of Australia.
“If Julia takes up my offer, I’ll happily guide her through the sights of Barry Island via an online video feed – I’m sure a lot has changed since she left.”
The same invitation was also extended by Charlotte to the Foursquare Mayor of Barry, just north of Sydney, to increase virtual diplomatic relations.
Charlotte joins Quadrant from Newcastle-based Bradley O’Mahoney. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Relations and has established national companies and regional SMEs on social media applications to help drive their business and increase visibility online.
