FEBRUARY UPDATE - THE LATEST ISSUES AFFECTING EUROPE
Thursday 17 February 2011
February’s instalment of Europe & You covers the hottest topics being discussed at the European Parliament that affect us here in Britain.
In the studio this month, Quadrant's Andrea Mott and Georg von Harrach discuss a new European report that praises the UK for improving its recycling rate. Andrea and Georg are joined by the Leader of the Conservatives in Europe, Martin Callanan MEP and Green Representative Bas Eickhout MEP from Holland, to see what else Britain could be doing to reduce our amount of landfill.
Along with this studio debate Andrea speaks with Arlene McCarthy MEP, Labour North West regarding a new European law that could be passed to give Brits better rights should they be arrested abroad. Arlene, who is helping to steer the plans through, suggests that this new law will make sure Brits abroad will have the same human rights as they do at home.
Andrea and Georg also discuss how this year’s cold spell caused devastating delays and disruptions along with the lessons that need to be learnt from the snowy standstill. Other topics include the laws surrounding seeking medical treatment abroad and improving health and safety laws within the workplace.
