FISH FIGHT IS TAKEN TO BRUSSELS
Wednesday 06 July 2011
Following the campaign to stop fish caught in the North Sea being unnecessarily thrown back into the ocean dead, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has taken the fight to the European Parliament in Brussels.
Hugh hopes to gather support from the European Union for his call for change and see an end to the practice of discards.
The fisheries industry says the current system is bad for business and the environment.
Julie Girling MEP agrees that it is time to act: “This is an issue of natural justice and waste…we shouldn’t be wasting fish and we shouldn’t be wasting food.”
The EU is currently discussing how to reform the system which decides how much of each fish trawlers are allowed to catch.
