IN THE EUROPE AND YOU STUDIO THIS MONTH…
Wednesday 12 October 2011
The latest edition of Europe and You is available to watch now - the programme which looks at the local issues and stories happening in Europe which affect us here in Britain.
This month, the European Parliament has agreed that the EU’s border agency, Frontex, which helps patrol and control the external borders of Europe should be given more power.
Many have claimed the agency’s effectiveness has been undermined by a lack of resources, however from now on the agency will be able to buy or lease its own equipment, like cars or helicopters, rather than having to rely on what national governments allocate to it.
Joining Quadrant’s Andrea Mott and Georg von Harrach in the studio to discuss this issue is Conservative MEP for the South East of England Richard Ashworth, and German Green MEP Ska Keller.
Also in the programme, following the reports of rising levels of Tuberculosis in the UK, Scientists at the Oxford-Emergent Tuberculosis Consortium have been developing a new vaccine.
Although the project has already received millions of pounds in European funding, Dr Adam Stoten tells Europe and You that they require more funding to pay for the final trials to get the new vaccine onto the market.
