The Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership covers the South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed Powys police force areas. It was piloted in South Wales in April 2000 under a Government scheme and, since April 2002, it has incorporated the enlarged alliance. The initiative allows capital for the purchase of speed and red light cameras and enforcement equipment to be funded from fixed penalty revenue. Safety camera enforcement was previously funded from local authority and police budgets. As a result of its contribution to road casualty reduction, the scheme is being rolled out nationally, with 25 Partnerships currently operating in the UK. It is anticipated that within the next 18 months outstanding areas across the UK will also form part of the Safety Camera Partnership. Since the scheme began, the number of fatalities on South Wales roads has fallen by 25 per cent, with a 78 per cent reduction in pedestrian fatalities. The success has been largely due to a partnership-led approach to road safety.
