Milford Haven Port Authority Virtual Press Office

Milford Haven Port Authority is responsible for the biggest port in Wales, and the fifth largest port in the UK. One of the most prominent on the West Coast, it is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. Milford Haven is a trust port - an independent, commercially run organisation, and as a result, the Authority has a statutory responsibility to both Government and its stakeholders, and is required to reinvest all profits to the benefit of the latter. The Authority provides pilotage and a range of port, harbour and associated services including stevedoring, support to the fishing industry, ship repair, marina and leisure facilities and provision and operation of the Pembroke Dock Ferry Terminal used by Irish Ferries. The former wholly owned subsidiary, DV Howells, now sold to Braemar Seascope, is a leading UK oil, chemical and hazardous substances spill response company which also specialises in training and environmental consultancy.

The Port has several subsidiaries: the Milford Docks Company, which is playing a key role in providing state-of-art-facilities for the resurgent fishing industry; Pembroke Port, with a recently extended ferry terminal to serve the burgeoning ferry trade; DV Howells, experts in pollution control and training; Milford Haven Ship Repairers, with its own dry dock; Marine and Port Services, which provides engineering and supply services to users of the waterway and Pembroke Lifting Services, which operates a fleet of seven mobile cranes.

In addition to providing services for shipping, the Port Authority is actively seeking to expand the Port’s activities for the benefit of the local economy. As part of this, the Port wishes to enhance the waterway for leisure users, and is looking to provide light industrial units at Pembroke Port and Milford Docks.

The Port Authority also provides conservancy functions within the haven to ensure safe passage of ships. This includes dredging, provision of navigation aids and removal of wrecks and obstructions and a fully integrated pilotage service.
