SPEEDS REACH 115MPH THROUGH IKEA ROADWORKS

The Safety Camera Partnership is urging drivers to observe the restricted 50mph speed limit on the A4232 (Cardiff Bay/M4 link road) after speeds of up to 115mph have been recorded by cameras.

Construction workers have raised concerns for their safety as a result of the speeds being driven through the restricted area between the Leckwith junction and Butetown Tunnel. The 50mph speed limit is in place to allow essential roadworks to take place for the new IKEA development.

Since enforcement began at the end of July, the highest speed recorded was 115mph by a motorcycle and 85mph by a car. Both drivers now face court cases.

John Rowling, project manager of the Safety Camera Partnership, which is responsible for static and mobile speed camera enforcement in the Dyfed Powys, South Wales and Gwent police force areas, warned that travelling at these speeds not only results in a fine and points on the licence but, more importantly, endangers the innocent lives of other people.

“Despite adequate signing and advanced publicity in the local press, motorists are still ignoring the restricted speed limit. During the first week of enforcement, 240 motorists were recorded exceeding 50mph,” he said.

“The speed limit is in place to protect the construction workers, not to catch motorists out and we are asking all drivers to be patient and reduce their speeds when driving through the restricted area.”
