WORLD’S LARGEST SAIL TRAINING SHIP TO VISIT MILFORD HAVEN
Would-be sailors are being offered the chance to join the crew of the world’s largest sail training ship, which is due in Milford Haven next month.
The magnificent Russian-owned four-masted barque Sedov will be calling in at the port between 16 and 19 April for a visit arranged by the Tall Ships (Wales) Trust, and supported by Milford Haven Port Authority.
Anyone who fancies splicing the mainbrace or jumping on the fo’c’sle has two chances to bag a passage – either by joining Sedov when she leaves Penzance on April 4 bound for Milford Haven, or when she leaves the West Wales port on 19 April for a round-Britain voyage to Hamburg, arriving on May 6.
Berths for up to 10 people, male or female and aged over 16, will be available on each leg of the voyage at a cost of £475 and £685 a ticket respectively.
The visit has been organised by the West-Wales based charity Tall Ships (Wales) Trust, which helps youngsters in Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire experience tall ships sailing on vessels all round the world.
The 117-metre, 3,500 ton Sedov, with her 60-strong Russian crew and 100 cadets, will be welcomed in Milford Haven by the town’s Mayor with a reception in the Town Hall, and will be open to the public at various times during her stay.
Originally built in Kiel, Germany in 1921, she passed into Russian hands and was renamed Sedov after Georgy Sedov (1877-1914), a celebrated Arctic explorer. She took part in the last grain race to Australia in 1939, and was used by the Russian state as a training ship for its fishing fleet. Sedov is currently owned by Murmansk State Technical University and operated as a training ship.
