MOTORISTS ASKED TO SLOW DOWN AT A40 ROADWORKS

A serious accident will occur on the A40 in Carmarthen unless motorists observe the temporary speed restriction of 40mph in place along the stretch of roadworks, the Safety Camera Partnership warned today.

The Safety Camera Partnership is disappointed at the high speeds recorded during the first day of enforcement on the A40 around the Johnstown area, despite repeated warnings of the reduced speed in advance of the roadworks.

Of those caught exceeding 40mph, 45 motorists were recorded driving at 26mph or more above the restricted speed limit, with a top speed of 87mph. These drivers now face a court appearance.

John Rowling, manager of the Safety Camera Partnership, which is responsible for static and mobile speed camera enforcement in the Dyfed Powys, South Wales and Gwent police force areas, warned that travelling at these speeds not only results in a fine and points on the licence but, more importantly, endangers the innocent lives of other people.

“We have serious concerns over the speeds driven through the roadworks. It is an accident waiting to happen and we are appealing to all motorists to think of the workers on the site and other road users and slow down. The speed limit is in place for the safety of motorists and to protect the construction workers – not to catch people out. There is adequate advanced signing informing people of the roadworks and impending restriction so there’s no excuse for these high speeds,” he said.

The 40mph restriction will remain for the duration of the roadworks and the Safety Camera Partnership will continue to enforce this speed limit through the stretch of road until the work is complete.
