Historical Sailing Experiences for All
The Maritime Heritage Programme is giving people the chance to experience life as an 18th century sailor. If you’re aged 18-24 you can enter a free draw on the Milford Haven Port Authority stand at the Pembrokeshire County Show next week (17-19 August) to win a three night adventure on board the Endeavour, either sailing from St Helier (Jersey) to Milford Haven on 31 August to 3 September or from Milford Haven to Belfast on 7 to 10 September. Two winners will be drawn from all correct entries and they will be notified by post. (Winners will have to cover the cost of the journey to St Helier/from Belfast).
The draw is part of the Maritime Heritage Programme’s celebrations to mark the arrival of Captain Cook’s replica ship, the Endeavour in September (4-6 September).
Stella Hooper, Maritime Heritage Programme Officer said: “The arrival of the Endeavour in September is exciting news for the area. The ship will be moored at Hakin Wharf in Milford Haven for three days where it will be open to the public.
“We wanted to mark this occasion and what better way than giving people the chance to experience life on board. We expect a high number of entries as it isn’t everyday that you can win such a unique prize!”
As well as giving people the chance to experience life on board, the Maritime Heritage Programme is also offering people the opportunity of taking to the water as a member of the 13 strong crew of Pembrokeshire’s new replica of a 38 foot 18th Century Captain’s gig. This ten oar open vessel also has an impressive turn of speed under sail. People can register their interest by visiting the Milford Haven Port Authority stand at the Pembrokeshire County Show or by telephoning 01646 696108.
During the Endeavour’s time at Hakin Wharf, visitors can experience life onboard the 18th century vessel, getting the opportunity to stand at the helm of this great ship and marvel at the towering masts. They can also visit the crew’s sleeping quarters, strewn with hammocks and wonder at the frugal delights of the galley!
The original Endeavour, one of the most famous British ships of discovery, embarked on her first voyage in 1768 captained by Lt James Cook. This voyage of exploration and scientific investigation to the East Coast of Australia took over three years to complete and was followed by a number of other famous explorations to places such as Tahiti, and Botany Bay.
The Endeavour’s visit is the second event organized by the Maritime Heritage Programme, a European INTERREG-funded project which links Pembrokeshire with the Waterford area of South East Ireland.
Supported by Milford Haven Port Authority and other partners, the project aims to capitalize on interest in maritime heritage and promote the areas through events and activities.
