STUDENTS RECEIVE PORT AUTHORITY’S SCHOLARSHIPS

Five students from West Wales have received scholarships worth £5,000 from Milford Haven Port Authority to support them in their university studies.

They have received the awards in the second year of the scheme, developed by the Port Authority to help nurture local academic talent, and to encourage young people to consider Pembrokeshire as a good place to work.

The scholarship scheme offers £1,000 each to undergraduates to help them for a year of their degree course at any Higher Education establishment in the UK, providing they have lived in, and been educated in, Pembrokeshire.

A post-graduate studying a subject relevant to the role and activities of the Port Authority is also supported with a £2,000 grant.

The scholarships this year have been awarded to:

  • Hannah Polacarz, aged 21 of Haverfordwest, who is in her fourth year at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff. She is a former pupil of Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest
  • Beverley Wilson, aged 21 of Llanfyrnach, Pembrokeshire, who attended Ysgol Gyfun Ddwyieithog y Preseli, and is now in her fourth year studying veterinary medicine at the Royal Veterinary College, London
  • Jo-Dee Williams, aged 20 of Milford Haven, who is in her third year studying physiotherapy at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff. Jo-Dee attended Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Taf secondary school and Pembrokeshire College
  • Claire Jones, aged 20 of Crymych, who is studying music at the Royal College of Music in London. She attended Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych
  • Rachel Evans, aged 20 of Pembroke Dock, a third year student at Exeter University studying English and French. Rachel was a former pupil at Pembroke Comprehensive School
The postgraduate award went to Hugh Smith, aged 25 of Cardiff, who is in his second year of studies for a PhD in Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Science at the University of Wales, Cardiff. He attended King Alfred’s School, Oxford, and has degrees in Marine Biology from the University of Wales, Swansea, and in Tropical Coastal Management from Newcastle University

Congratulating the recipients, Port Authority Chief Executive Ted Sangster said that, as a trust port, the Authority had a role to play in contributing to the economic development of West Wales.

“We are delighted to be able to help six talented individuals through their academic careers,” he said.

“As a local employer, we recognise the need to attract and retain well qualified people who can make positive contributions to our business. Equally, we realise that many young people in Pembrokeshire often have to move away from the county to gain qualifications and develop their careers, and that there is a significant financial burden on students in doing so.

“We believe this scholarship scheme will help to nurture the undoubted talent within the county – and who knows, may be we will see some of these young students working in Pembrokeshire in the future and using that talent to help develop this part of Wales.”
