MILFORD HAVEN PLANS TO EXPAND AS CRUISE PORT
One of the UK’s newest cruise ports says it aims to expand its business as it goes into its third year of operation by capturing its share of national and transatlantic routes.
Milford Haven, on the western coast of Wales, already has five cruise ship calls scheduled for this year, and two planned for 2006.
It is the only port in the UK located within a coastal national park, and over the past few years has played host to an ever-growing number of cruise passengers.
Ted Sangster, chief executive of Milford Haven Port Authority, said that with its high quality berthing facilities, professional service to cruise lines and natural deep-water harbour which puts visitors into the heart of the lush county of Pembrokeshire, Milford Haven was well-placed to receive cruises from further afield.
“The vessels which have called here in our first few years have been on round-Britain cruises, and have been captivated by the exciting and stunning setting which has so much for passengers to see and do,” he said.
“We have worked with Pembrokeshire Tourism and the County Council to ensure that the ships’ visitors are warmly welcomed ashore, and get the benefit of well-planned trips around this breathtaking countryside and coastline.
“The magnificent waterways, outstanding natural beauty, fascinating wildlife, spectacular castles and cathedrals are just a few features which illustrate Pembrokeshire’s unique Celtic culture and splendour, and I am confident that this year we will see the appeal of the Haven spread to national and transatlantic operators as they realise what we have to offer here.”
In recent years, cruise ships such as the German Astor carrying 600 passengers and the Discovery with its 500 passengers, have called at Milford Haven to enjoy quayside greetings by the local Haverfordwest male voice choir, festival events in the town, visits to the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Pembroke Castle, the towns of St. Davids and Tenby, and walks along the county’s famous Coastal Path.
Milford Haven Port Authority is responsible for the safe navigation and conservancy within the 200 square mile sheltered Milford Haven waterway. Its experienced and professional staff can offer cruise lines a friendly and efficient service at both Milford Haven and Pembroke Ports, adhering to the highest standards of safety and security. All the cruise facilities meet the standards required by the ISPS code and have digitally recorded CCTV systems.
