MOTORISTS ASKED TO SLOW DOWN AT M4 ROADWORKS

A serious accident will occur on the M4 between junctions 36 and 37 unless motorists observe the temporary speed restriction of 50mph in place along the stretch of roadworks, Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership warned today.

There have already been a number of collisions since work began on the M4 between Sarn and Pyle and the Partnership is disappointed at the high speeds recorded during the first week of mobile camera enforcement, despite repeated warning of the reduced speed in advance of the roadworks. A top speed of 81mph was recorded – this driver now faces a court appearance, large fine and possible loss of licence.

Phil Davies, manager of Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership, said that such high speeds are unacceptable and put lives at risk. “It’s not just about the person behind the wheel but innocent roadworkers put themselves at risk everyday while they go about their work. A number of roadworkers are killed or seriously injured each year – all these deaths and injuries are avoidable,” he said.

“Driving at 81mph through this stretch of road is totally irresponsible and we are asking all motorists to be patient and slow down while the roadworks are in place. The restricted speed limit is there to protect motorists and the construction workers, not to catch people out.”

The 50mph restriction will remain while resurfacing and bridge repairs are undertaken and Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership will continue to enforce this speed limit in both directions through the stretch of motorway until the work is complete in approximately 12 weeks.
