THE TRUTH BEHIND THE RETURN OF THE A4232 SPEED CAMERA

Motorists are being asked to stick to the temporary 50mph speed limit on the A4232 (Cardiff Bay/M4 link road) while essential roadworks take place for the new International Sports Village development in Cardiff Bay.

Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership has placed a static speed camera on the northbound stretch just after the Butetown Tunnel to slow motorists down as they approach the junction where work is taking place.

A static camera was previously erected at this site in 2003 to encourage motorists to slow down during roadworks for the IKEA development. It was removed as soon as work was finished.

Phil Davies, manager of Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership, said that the camera had been installed to protect roadworkers while they carry out the development. “These workers deserve to be able to do their job in safety – after all they’re putting themselves at risk to make the roads better for all of us. Innocent roadworkers are killed and injured every year so we’re asking all motorists to be patient and stick to this 50mph limit. We also want to slow motorists down as they approach the roadworks so they don’t crash into the back of queuing traffic.

“There is a rumour circulating that this camera was previously removed because it wasn’t working. This isn’t true. When we erected the camera for the IKEA development, we made a public promise to motorists that it would be taken down as soon as these roadworks were complete. We were true to our word and make the same promise this time – the camera will be taken away once work ends,” he said.

Speeds of up to 115mph were recorded by cameras during the IKEA roadworks despite advanced warning of the 50mph speed limit.

Fixed and mobile safety cameras can only be used where people have been killed or injured, at sites of community concern or to protect roadworkers.
