GCSE STUDENTS ARE TOP OF THEIR GAME…..IN CRICKET, NETBALL AND SAXOPHONE!
As GCSE students collect their results this week, some top performing students prove that as well as achieving those top grades, they can also excel with their extra curricular activities.
Emily Tate, a student at Christ College Brecon, achieved two A*’s, 4 A’s and 4 B’s in her GCSE’s and also plays netball for Wales (under 17’s) and for her county (Powys). She said: “I am over the moon with my results. I’m thrilled. I’m going to continue with my netball next year while studying for my A-Levels.”
Greg Webber, who also studies at Christ College in Brecon, is an international (under 17) cricketer, who has been asked by Glamorgan Cricket to join them full time next year. He achieved one A*, two A’s, five B’s and two Cs. He said: “I’m just about to go on tour with my cricket to Jersey so collecting these results is a great boost for me. I’ve decided to stay on at Christ College to complete my A Levels before focusing on my cricket career.”
Steffan Raw-Rees, from Aberystwyth achieved five A*’s, four A’s, two B’s and one C in his GCSE grades. A first language Welsh speaker, Steffan was also awarded Grade Eight Saxophone with Distinction this year and came third in the Brecon Triathalon. He said: “I’ve done much better than I expected and my mum is pleased too. I’m going to study physics, chemistry, maths and music for A-Level next year but it’ll be a busy time because I also want to continue playing rugby, football and my saxophone too.”
Simon Spencer, Second Master at Christ College, said: “It’s great to see our pupils excelling with their GCSE results as well as being top performers in their extra curricular activities too. We are very proud of them. We are also delighted with the overall results and, as usual, impressed by the performances of boys and girls of all levels of ability.
Over 90 per cent of all Christ College Brecon grades were A - C, over 70 per cent were A* - B grades and 40 per cent of all the schools GCSE grades were A* or A. Well over half the year passed 10 subjects at C grade or higher and approximately two thirds of pupils gaining A or A* grades in art, religious studies, drama and PE. Language results were strong too, with over half the entrants gaining A or A* grades in French.
