NEW CAERPHILLY HOSPITAL PLANS MOVE STEP FORWARD

Plans for the development of a new 276-bed hospital for Caerphilly have moved a step forward with the appointment of the team that will design and construct the building.

HBG has been awarded the contract to develop the £133 million hospital, which will include a local emergency centre, diagnostic and treatment services, children’s clinic, midwifery led unit, integrated care centre and hydrotherapy services. The hospital will be completed by the end of 2010.

One of the UK’s leading construction services organisations with an office in Cardiff, HBG has worked on some major healthcare projects including a rehabilitation unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, East Ayeshire Community Hospital, Caswell Clinic at Glanrhyd Hospital in Bridgend, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Wharfedale Locality Hospital.

The team also includes Nightingale Associates, an international firm of architects specialising in healthcare design, which is responsible for the new hospitals currently under construction at Llwynypia and Porthmadog.

Judith Paget, chief executive of Caerphilly Local Health Board, said that the appointment was a significant milestone for the new hospital. “Now we have the team on board, we can start work on how the hospital is going to look and share these plans with people in Caerphilly. We’ll be working closely with HBG and the rest of the team to create a building that not only houses state of the art facilities but also allows us to expand the range of treatment and care available to local residents,” she said.

David Slack, account director at HBG, said: “We are naturally delighted to be awarded this prestigious project and look forward to working closely with the Trust and the Local Health Board to provide a hospital we can all be proud of.”
