FOURTH YEAR OF PORT AUTHORITY’S SCHOLARSHIPS

Former Milford Haven and Haverforwest students have shared a £5,000 scholarship fund set up by Milford Haven Port Authority to help nurture local academic talent.

The five students were each presented with a £1,000 cheque at a ceremony marking the fourth year of the scholarship scheme, which aims to help students for a year of their degree course at any Higher Education establishment in the UK, providing they have lived in, and been educated in, Pembrokeshire.

Applications to the scheme have increased every year over the past four years, making the selection of the best recipients a difficult job for the adjudication panel.

This year, the scholarships were awarded to:

  • Tim Rudd, a first year student of Materials Science & Engineering at Swansea University, who attended Milford Haven Comprehensive
  • Former Milford Haven Comprehensive pupil Eleri Williams, now in her first year studying BA French & Spanish Bristol University
  • Matthew Boselli, also ex-Milford Haven Comprehensive, in his third year of an aerospace degree at Southampton University
  • Second year Jewellery Design student at the University of the Arts London, Jemma Slade, who attended Sir Thomas Picton School
  • Lucie Phillips, a former Milford Haven Comprehensive pupil now in her fourth year of a Architecture and Planning degree at the University of West of England
Port Authority Chief Executive Ted Sangster said the scholarship scheme had been devised as a way of supporting young people in Pembrokeshire.

“The Port Authority is a major employer in Pembrokeshire with a long-term plan to maintain and develop the economic prosperity of the region,” he said.

“As such, we need to employ people with a huge range of skills and backgrounds, and, with our scholarship scheme, want to play our part in developing the long-term labour pool, and encourage young people locally - who often think their careers will lie outside the county - that actually Pembrokeshire is a good place to work.

“We wish all our scholars success in their academic life and in the jobs they eventually secure – and would remind them not to forget about Pembrokeshire when they make their career choices in the future!”
