Christ College Pupil Presented Highest Guiding Award
Former Christ College pupil, Angharad Lewis, from Brecon, has this week been awarded the top UK Award for her services to girl guiding by the Lord Lieutenant of Powys, Shân Legge-Bourke.
The presentation of the Queen’s Guide Award took place at Angharad’s old school because of the important role Christ College played in helping her achieve the award - the highest accolade for members of Girlguiding UK. Also at the presentation was Mrs Cathryn Brooker, Chief Commissioner, Girlguiding Cymru.
The Award is open to any members aged 16 to 25 and must be completed within three years or before the girl’s 26th birthday. It is based on the concepts of personal challenge and participation and is split into five sections including 60 hours of practical guiding service, an outdoor challenge similar to that completed for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and a 12 month community action project. The sections are designed to give girls the chance to develop skills through activities that they enjoy.
Angharad was excited to go back to her old school and said: “Time has passed so quickly since leaving Christ College but it was great to go back and see some familiar faces. I started working on the Award when I was 16, so Christ College played an important role in my achievement. They fully supported me in all my Guiding activities when I was at school, including giving me time off to attend an International Guiding Jamboree in Sydney in 2003.”
Angharad is currently coming to the end of her first year at University but isn’t feeling daunted by the upcoming exams. “I’ve really enjoyed my course and it has been rewarding to see the skills I learnt at school coming together so well to help me in my first year. I’ve found university life a little hectic but fun and have even managed to continue my Guiding commitments by leading a local Brownie unit.”
