AUTHORITY GETS FIRED UP FOR GREEN DRAGON APPROVAL

Milford Haven Port Authority has achieved the second level of a prestigious environmental standard as part of an ongoing commitment to maintain and improve its environmental credentials.

All areas of the Authority’s business have been assessed as achieving Level 2 of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard, which focuses on understanding relevant environmental legal obligations and taking action to ensure they are met.

They have been supported in achieving the standard by ARENA Network, the organisation which provides practical support to business on environmental management and training related issues.

The Authority’s seven individual operational divisions were all assessed on how they documented the areas of their activity which had a key impact on the environment, and on their knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and other obligations.

The divisions had to show how they were complying with the legislation, and demonstrate the level of knowledge of their employees of their responsibilities and duties with regard to protecting the environment.

Finally, the Authority had to prove that it had robust systems for monitoring environmental indicators and that it had adequate records to ensure the effectiveness of the environmental management system.

Alan Furlong, Safety and HR Director for Milford Haven Port Authority, said the decision to work their way up the five levels of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard was based on the inescapable fact that environmental matters were very much prominent on the UK political agenda.

“The issues of global warming, greenhouse gas emissions and consequential sea level rise are to the forefront of people’s minds, along with waste minimisation and recycling,” he said.

“That’s why we have decided to make our contribution by having our systems guided and verified by an acknowledged standard, and I’m delighted that everyone’s hard work had paid off with this Level 2 accreditation.”
