CALLING ALL PICNIC LOVERS

Ten Welsh sites shortlisted in nationwide awards

Families are being urged to vote for their favourite picnic spot in Wales in this year’s Warburtons Picnic Awards.

Warburtons, Britain’s favourite family baker, is hosting the 2nd annual awards in the build up to this year’s National Bread Week, which runs from 5 to 11 May, and celebrates the Great British picnic and the UK’s love of loaves.

The 10 Welsh sites will battle it out in the regional heat to become Wales’ ‘Best Picnic Spot’ and will also be given the chance to represent the region in the national final. The shortlist of 10 sites was drawn up in conjunction with Visit Wales.

During the final heat, the Welsh winner will go on to battle it out against the other regional winners from across the UK for the coveted title of ‘Warburtons Best Picnic Spot 2008’. The overall winner will receive a £1,000 cash bursary for the site and a plaque to ensure all visitors know it’s the UK’s favourite place to picnic. Each regional winner will also be presented with a £500 bursary towards the maintenance of the site, ensuring visitors can continue to enjoy picnics in future years.

Jonathan Warburton, Chairman of Warburtons, said: “The Warburtons Picnic Awards 2008 are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate one of our Great British traditions and uncover the most popular spots where families can enjoy a picnic. Warburtons wants to ensure picnics are a part of family life for many years to come, and remember - no picnic is complete without a sandwich!”

Jonathan Jones, Director of Tourism and Marketing, Visit Wales, added: “Wales has so many beautiful and picturesque places to picnic, the shortlisted 10 sites is just the tip of the iceberg. Everyone has a different idea of what makes an ideal picnic spot and everyone has memories of having a picnic somewhere close to their heart. We hope that people show their support for their favourite by voting and making one of these Welsh wonders the ultimate picnic spot in the UK. If you haven't tried one of these sites as a picnic spot - now's your chance.”

The 10 Welsh sites are:

  • Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey
  • Rhossili, Gower
