Public invited to visit opening of Infinergy’s Castle Pill Wind Farm

Local residents are being invited to join in the official opening of Pembrokeshire’s first wind farm near Milford Haven next week.

Wind farm developer Infinergy is formally opening the newly-constructed Castle Pill Wind Farm in Steynton on June 17, during UK Wind Week, and says people living nearby who might like to visit the site on the day would be very welcome.

The Castle Pill development consists of three brand new super-quiet, industry-leading direct drive turbines that have just been erected. With their combined installed capacity of 2.7 megawatts, they will supply the annual demand up to 1,500 homes every year (source: BWEA).

The company, which has set up its Wales office in the Technium building in Cleddau Reach, is providing short tours around the wind farm to mark the opening and will be on hand to answer any questions that visitors might have about wind power in general and Castle Pill Wind Farm in particular.

Project manager Lorraine Dallmeier said they had decided to hold the official opening of the wind farm during the British Wind Energy Association’s Wind Week.

“Wind Week is an annual event, and is all about giving members of the public an opportunity to visit an operating wind farm up close and to find out how wind power works,” she said. “It is an ideal time to launch our new venture in Pembrokeshire – we are very proud of it and want to show it off!”

Local people who would like to take part in a visit are asked to go to Infinergy’s offices in the Technium between 2.00 and 8.00pm on June 17pm from where regular buses will be run to the site. Company representatives will be available to show people around the turbines and tell them more about the operation of wind farms.

There has been a turbine on the site at Steynton since 2004 which will be relocated. The new wind farm (4 turbines in total) will annually replace between 3,100 and 7,300 tonnes of the greenhouse gas CO2, depending on whether the power it replaces is generated by gas or by coal. This will play a significant role in helping Pembrokeshire combat the effects of climate change.

Infinergy is a renewable energy company, developing onshore wind farms throughout the UK. Infinergy owns Castle Pill Wind Farm’s operating company NIK Energy and is also developing Wear Point Wind Farm at the SemLogistics site in Waterston.

Anyone interested in more information about the event on the 17th June, is invited to contact Infinergy directly on Freephone 0800 980 4299.
